Who we are
Yachting Northern Territory is the peak body for sailing and boating in Northern Territory, representing clubs, and class associations and their members who are involved in competitive sailing and recreational boating.
Our Vision
Sailing, and boating will be recognised as enjoyable, accessible, safe sport and lifetime recreation for everyone.
Our Mission
To have more people participating more successfully, and more enjoyably, in boating and sailing.
What we do for our members
Yachting Northern Territory has seven major objectives:
Strategic Representation
We represent sailing and boating to the Government on major strategic issues that impact clubs and their members, particularly at a Territory level.
Participation Marketing
We encourage people to participate at member clubs by promoting a positive image and providing programs to clubs. Our Sailability program enables and encourages people of all abilities to participate.
Training
We have three active training streams:
· Darwin Sailing Club is an accredited Yachting Australia Training Centre.
· YNT Sailing Team caters for the experienced sailors aspiring to reach higher levels at national or international events.
· Running courses at Yachting Northern Territory to develop and accredit officials.
Coaching
To improve the competitiveness of Northern Territory sailors we run programs for junior, youth and open sailing teams and we are developing coaches.
Service to Clubs
We provide service, support and information to member clubs and facilitate the exchange of information between them.
Competition & Event Development
We aim to increase safe participation in events at member clubs and their expertise in event and race management. We are the organising authority for the Northern Territory Championships.
Our own administration and governance
We ensure our own administration is effective and efficient and meets the expectations of our stakeholders.
How do we operate?
We have an elected Executive, and input from relevant clubs, local associations and interest groups.
How are we funded?
· The major source of income is the department of Sport and Recreation at Northern Territory Government with whom we conduct special projects, events and programs.
· Affiliation fees, which are paid by clubs based on their membership.
· Some income derives from the services we provide and the events and activities we run.
· Sailability is a tax deductible charitable body, willing to receive bequests and donations.
Why we exist?
Yachting Northern Territory provides leadership to sailing and boating clubs in Northern Territory.
As a peak body Yachting Northern Territory provides a link between the yacht clubs, class associations, Yachting Australia, the International Sailing Federation and Northern Territory Government.
Who are our members?
Yachting Northern Territory’s members are the Yacht Clubs – clubs that vary significantly in size, location, membership and needs. Currently there are 2 active clubs in NT, Darwin Sailing Club and Gove Yacht Club.
Individuals members are issued with membership cards by Yachting Australia as evidence of their club membership. This entitles them to participate in events and also delivers a range of benefits including personal accident insurance, regular communication from both Yachting Australia and Yachting Northern Territory, and discounted services.
How do we communicate with our members?
Yachting NT will be setting up regular communication with our members both via the YNT website and also via electronic newsletters.
What’s the difference between Yachting Australia and Yachting Northern Territory?
Around half the affiliation fees paid by clubs are paid to Yachting Australia. As our national body Yachting Australia manages our relationships with the Federal Government and its agencies such as the Australian Sports Commission and Institute of Sport. It also provides the high performance coaching program, the national yacht racing rules and officiating framework, our national training framework, policies, and services to clubs such as information technology and public liability insurance.
Yachting Northern Territory in many instances acts as the local service centre for Yachting Australia, supporting clubs in adopting Yachting Australia services.
Locally we also manage relationships with the Northern Territory and Local Government and their agencies, including the Northern Territory Institute of Sport. Most importantly we are here to help clubs with the attraction of new members and providing service to them and their membership.
